COMING UP.....

Celticana looks forward to a series of concerts during May and June 2009, playing at venues in Penzance, Plymouth, Barnstaple and Swansea, in association with Sky Arts for Classic Fm. They will play music from the Baroque era as well as new works by Howard Goodall, Classic FM's Composer in Residence. They will be joined by several other string players to create 'Ensemble Celticana'.

RECENT HIGHLIGHTS.....Celticana played at the Lyric Theatre, Carmarthen on March 1st, a celebratory concert for St. David's Day.

Celticana played at Wisley Gardens on November 6th as part of an evening of music with Classic FM.

'Classic FM and NS&I proudly present an exclusive evening of classical music hosted by Classic FM's Simon Bates and featuring Alfie Boe, Elin Manahan-Thomas plus the Celticana String Quartet set amidst the stunning waterlilies and orchids of the Glasshouse gardens of RHS Garden Wisley on November the 6th.'

Celticana String Quartet is an exciting, innovative and entertaining ensemble with a huge breadth of experience and a versatility that is rarely found in a classical group today. Ten years ago, the four members of Celticana - all born and brought up in Wales, decided to create an ensemble capable of musical excellence and thrilling performance. Celticana has always had a unique willingness to be diverse and the individual flourishing careers of the players help bring depth and character to the music making. In fact, in the words of Bryn Terfel, " Celticana have made a lasting impression over the last few years which makes them a good bet for the future".

They participated enthusiastically in Live Music Now for four years, performing all over England and Wales, taking music to people who otherwise would not be able to access it. They were chosen to play for the 25th year anniversay of LMN at Windsor Castle and Cardiff Castle. The Quartet played at the Wigmore Hall during Quartet Week, running workshops for pre-school children and appeared with Nicholas Cleobury and Henry Kelly in performances of Peter and the Wolf for the Sounds New Festival at  Canterbury.

Celticana played for the BBC Songs of Praise with Bryn Terfel and in 2003 and 2004 the Quartet was invited to play at his Faenol Festival alongside artists including Jamie Cullum, Jules Holland, Simon Keenleyside and Bryn himself.

Celticana has appeared at Music Festivals all over Europe, including Aosta in Turin, Italy, St. David’s, Fishguard International, Llwynderw Swansea, Denbigh, North Wales International, All Saints Alive Swansea, the Welsh Proms at St. David’s Hall, Swansea Festival and the National Eisteddfod of Wales. They have performed with several major choirs in England and Wales including the Cleethorpe Orpheus, Pontarddulais Male Choir, Morriston Rugby Choir and Morriston Orpheus Choir (with soloist Rebecca Evans). They were the Quartet in Residence at the Criccieth Festival during 2004 and in the Theatr Ardudwy Concert Series, with pianist Iwan Llewelyn-Jones, performing "Mapping Wales", a special commission by John Metcalf.

In 2005 Celticana took the stage at the BBC Proms in the Park. As principal players with Sinfonia Cymru they accompanied the Opera Gala and Songs of Inspiration with Aled Jones, Katherine Jenkins and Bryn Terfel at the Faenol Festival in North Wales. These were subsequently broadcast on the television programmes Dechrau Canu and BBC Songs of Praise. Celticana went on to record a CD 'Benedictus' with Bryn Terfel, Catrin Finch and Rhys Meirion on the Welsh recording label Sain . The CD reached Number 3 in the Classical charts!

In 2006 Celticana performed on the Italian island of Ischia at the invitation of Lady Walton, the wife of the late composer Sir William Walton. The Quartet gave a series of recitals, including works by Walton to audiences at 'La Mortella'- the beautiful estate on which the Waltons spent many years together.

The quartet has helped raise many thousands of pounds for charities including Save the Children, Breast Cancer Wales, Heartbeat Wales, the British Heart Foundation, the Samaritans and Books for the Blind. They joined Fflur Wyn and Catrin Finch at Craig y Nos in a Gala Music Night in aid of Kidney Research and performed at the Welsh Millennium Centre with the Morriston Orpheus Choir, Dennis O’Neill, Aled Jones, Steve Balsamo and others again for Kidney Research Wales. They all play instruments made in the last 20 years.
